Answer
NO! There is no legal way to cross into Burma except for Mae Sai in the far north and Mae Sot. We have known many people that have crossed into Burma illegally without any problems but we have also met a few that have had severe problems. Unless you know the up to date facts on Burma, The Shan State (bordering Pai and Pangmapha) and the karen State (mae Hong Son and south of it) you would be attempting nothing short of a suicide mission.
One un-common fact: Talk of landmines and Cambodia will be most prominent in any news feature but, did you know that more landmines have been removed in Cambodia than the Border of Thailand and Burma? In fact less than 0.2% of all landmines on the border have been removed.
But I have spoken to someone that had someone from the Army guide them into Burma?: Yes you probably have but if they had taken a GPS with them more than likely 'the Guide' would have told them that this was dangerous because the Burmese may see them as a spy. The real reason? You would have proved that you hadn't actually been into Burma at all! Lets be honest the jungles of the Burmese Border do not have signposts syaing 'Burma This way" So you would not know any different. All that would have been factual was you were fleeced by someone and you could end up in a lot of trouble
